Text 1 (Number 1-9)Boyana Church, the church of Saint Nicholas and Saint Panteleimon, is situated in Sofia, Bulgaria. This church is one of the complete and totally preserved monuments testifying to the great contribution of Bulgarian monumental painting to European culture in the Middle Ages. It is made up of three buildings and built at a different period. The first construction, known as the eastern part, was in the 10th century. It was originally designed as a chapel in the shape of a Greek cross with a dome and made completely of brick. Beautiful brick work with rows and patterns outline the blind decorative arches on the outside there are three of them on both the north and south facades with the central arches being higher than the side ones. Light enters the cathedral through several long, thin apertures in the dome and walls, revealing the murals. Murals cover the whole interior surface of the First Church. A second coating was added in the 18thcentury, thus the original frescos can only be seen in a few spots where the upper layer has been removed, revealing what is beneath. The second construction was built up at the beginning of the13th century. It was built as an addition to the first building. This is a two-story structure having direct access from the original church's western side. The first floor is barren and has only two niches in the walls, implying that it was intended as a family mausoleum. An exterior moveable staircase connects to the second story, which was apparently used as a chapel until the staircase was removed and the chapel repurposed into a defense tower in the event of danger The outer decorations, which include figural details and arches on the walls, follow the style of the First Church but incorporate some innovative approaches The mixed masonry works are made of white stone and red brick and are embellished with tiny shining ceramic “cups’. One of the arches on the southern wall is larger since it served as the chapel’s entrance. The last construction was completely built on donations from the local community in the mid-19th century. It was built during the revival period in the nineteenth century. This is the annex, and it is the largest of the three churches. According to legend, once the church was liberated in 1878, the locals planned to demolish it and replace it with a larger one. Tsartsa Eleonora rescued it and, with the assistance of her husband, Tsar Fedinand, provided the villagers with another plot to construct on. The royal family commissioned the creation of a lovely park surrounding the church, where uncommon (for this latitude) species such as great sequoia trees were planted. It is stated in the passage that …..
